The "key", in my opinion, is to surrender to a way of life that includes God and other people. Our ideas must be put aside and new ideas must be internalized and acted upon. The twelve-step movement is one of the greatest miracles of the twentieth century. It is liberal and promotes freedom with nonrestrictive directions, suggestions on how to convert one's life to success. It works every time, in my opinion. It works every time if the person desirous of recovery follows the path laid down for him or her exactly as advised.
Yet, in the twelve-step fellowship, I have seen much death and destruction from those who attend the meetings and will not follow the directions. they tend to sabotage their chance to get sober and clean. At times, I wonder if their genetic poolings for addiction are incredibly high or they have bad luck... Ihave come tobelieve/ think that these are those who simply will not surrender their way of doing things and conform.
In the sixties, we prided ourselves on being nonconformists. This had to change when my life was on the line. Then it was time to use the program to survive and get rid of the ideas and actions that were killing me. Then I had to be grateful for the opportunity. I want to leave here sober. I never want my wonderful daughter to see or hear about me being drunk or high. It's a great opportunity to be sober and clean. All I have to do is follow the path, especially when i don't want to do so.
