Disease label gives hope to alcoholics, addicts and their families.

When we learn that we did not want the addictive path and took it anyways, we can see that there is a tendency to use incredible amounts of alcohol and/or drugs by people like us. We did not plan this nor did we write this as a life goal or a make the concept the cornerstone of our mission statement. When we 'used', we wanted more and we took more because we had incredible cravings to have more. We did not create this nor are we weak-willed or morally decrepit beings who are 'less-than'. We end up feeling like this after a time of using and become shame-based as a result. Some addicts/alcoholics feel this way before but not all. The body craves and the mind wants, even obsesses.
When we believe the above, when we see others who are doctors, judges, priests, ministers, rabbis, renown musicians, artists and upstanding people in the community, politicians, lawyers, i.e., people who have the will to study for and pass the bar exam, their MD courses and residencies, internships, burn the midnight oil studying, sacrifice time, money, parties, friendships, trips and so forth to gain their status, we can see that the disease is 'equal-opportunity. It affects some in body and mind. There is a disposition to addiction that can be triggered when the 'product/substance' is ingested. We are victims until we recover or get put of denial. Then we can volunteer to return to 'using' or surrender and follow the path of millions who have succeeded in not only abstinence but happiness.
God forgives us for what we are going to do tomorrow. We must forgive ourselves and not override God's decision and direction. We must be guilt free in order to help the new person have a chance to get what we have. He or she will not want our guilt.
